I am a versatile player with experience playing in all backline positions (mainly at 13 or 12), very confident at 10 & also on the wing or at fullback.

I began playing rugby with Kilkenny RFC at under 6s level, all the way to Senior Mens Junior Level. Winning Provincial Towns Cup.

Progessed from South East Development Area Squads to Leinster u19 & Irish u18.

Played in University, winning 3 mens colleges All-Ireland league & 1 All ireland colleges Cup.

Played 4 seasons in All Ireland League senior mens level with Cashel RFC. I played the last season of rugby in 2023.

Have been coaching for the past 5 years in Kilkenny College (Private Leinster School) across many different age groups in head, attack and skills coaching roles. The last team that I coached was Junior Cup team U16 as a backs coach.

Looking to continue my development as a player to play highest level possible in (Sydney) Australia & to also pursue my development as a coach.

Coaching References

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this character reference letter on behalf of Aiden McDonald, a talented rugby player who has been an invaluable member of the Kilkenny Rugby Club over the years. I have had the pleasure of coaching Aiden for several years, and I highly recommend him for consideration as a member of your club.

Aiden is a great player who has consistently demonstrated his skills and versatility across the entire backline. Whether it be at scrum half, outhalf, centre, or on the wing, he has strong technical abilities and good game awareness. Aiden's agility, speed, strength and decision-making make him an asset to any team.

His attitude at training is second to none, consistently displaying a strong work ethic, discipline, and a genuine passion for the sport. Aiden also acts as a role model to younger players around him.  One period that stood out for me was Aiden's remarkable performance in the recent Towns Cup competition in 2022. He played an instrumental role in our victory, he scored a crucial try in both the semi-final and final matches. This was the first time in 20 years that our club emerged as Towns Cup champions. Aiden's determination stood out throughout the tournament, solidifying his position as a key player in our success.

Beyond his playing ability, Aiden is also a model teammate and has a great character off the pitch. He is highly respectful towards his coaches, fellow players, and referees.

In conclusion, it is without hesitation that I recommend Aiden McDonald for the opportunity to join your club.

Should you require any further information or have any specific inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

David O’Connor

To Whom It May Concern:

Aiden worked at Kilkenny College for five years as a Rugby Coach. During this time he had a very positive influence on the development of young players.

His enthusiasm and dedication was clear to see at every training session. His sessions were planned and organised so players could clearly see development throughout the session. Aiden’s attention to technical detail is excellent. He questions aspects of player behaviour on the pitch which adds to the learning and understanding for the players.

Aiden would also take individual sessions with players. This was very beneficial in relation to skill development. His personable, friendly manner is the reason why he has an excellent rapport with the players.

As an accomplished player himself (former Leinster u18 player and current player with Cashel in the All Ireland league), Aiden has the ability to transfer his playing knowledge and experience into his coaching. Aiden can play as a decision maker at outhalf or has the flexibility to play in the centre or the wing. This adaptability is very useful when on the pitch as a player or whilst taking a coaching session.

Aiden fits in very well as part of a team. Both his players and fellow coaches will certainly agree with this. His communication skills are excellent and his open personality allows him to be an important part of any team environment.

I wish Aiden well in any pathway he takes.
