This letter serves to confirm that Connor Van der Merwe was actively playing for and representing Wasps Rugby Club at U18 He was part of the Wasps Under 18 squad for the 2023 Golden Lions Youth Rugby season.
I personally had the privilege of coaching Connor as a young man at Under 18 level. He is a well-mannered individual, who displays sound morals on and off the field. His team respects him as a strong leader and relies on him a great deal. He is a team player who understands brotherhood and team dynamic. Every single match he plays he leaves everything out on the field and leads by example! Connor is the ultimate well-rounded player. He is a phenomenal tactical midfield back with one of the strongest and fastest ball carrying ability’s I have witnessed; he finds space and runs extremely hard in those spaces. Connor has a good skill set with excellent passing on both sides. Connor can play as an inside back as well as flyhalf and does well as a loose forward as he is extremely good on defense and can carry strong and make good meters with ball in hand. Connor has a strong defensive work rate and contributes with turn overs at break downs. Connor can step of both legs and accelerate into space with speed.
He has a canning ability to exploit space when on offer and on regular occasions turns the momentum of a game when you need it the most. Connor uplifts everyone around him with his leadership style. When he talks, the players gladly listen to him. He is the epitome of what we look for in a great Wasps player.
He is a smart rugby player who reads the game exceptionally well. We have often received compliments from referees about his mannerisms as a player, which speaks volumes as to the type of individual he is. He is always punctual & respectful. His work ethic is what sets him apart from others he works extremely hard on and off the field and is verry disciplined regarding training and giving his all and more.
Best of luck with your future rugby career Connor. I have no doubt you can play professionally if you keep working in the professionalism and determination you have done over the past year at wasps.
You will always have a special place in my heart as your U18 coach. You are an inspiring leader with a special ability to change a whole team’s dynamic. Your presence on the field calms down your entire team. The way you lead by example is extraordinary!
I hope to see you run out in provincial or national colors one day.
We wish you all the best with your future rugby career. Keep up the work rate!
Kind Regards,
Stephan Kruger – U18 Head coach of Wasps Rugby Club South Africa 2023
