I am a South African player that has done everything I can for the sport but had been beaten up by the current rugby system in the country.
I've played lock and looseforward most of my rugby carreer but about 4 years ago I was advised to play prop due to my natural size and ability to adapt quickly.
I've played Lions age group levels and some occasional invitation games, but my biggest achievements have come in the two biggest university rugby leagues in the world. I played two years in the FNB and Steinhoff Young Guns compitition and the big one, The FNB Varsity Cup the last two years.
In the last few years I have truly been blessed to be coached by some of the best coaches in the country and even the world. Here is a list of some om the coaches I've been coached by:
Joey Mongalo, he was the Lions super rugby defense coach when the made the final three years in a row. And he is my current defense coach and has been since 2017.
Wessel Roux, an old Springbok that has coached the Bulles super rugby forwards in their glory days. He now coaches the Lions supersport challenge team. He was my scrum coach in late 2017 and 2018.
Phillip Lemmer, was the forward coach of the Lions when they made the super rugby final three years in a row and he is currently the Lions super rugby collision and breakdown specialist. He is my current forward amd scrum coach and has been since late 2018.
Etienne Rhyneke, more know for being the stoke surviving mixed martial arts fighter, he played many games for the Stormers, Lions and Saracens. He was my head coach in 2017.
I've also had the privilege to have been coached by former Lions and Springbok captain Warren Whitely, he took our team for numerous line-out sessions from 2019 to 2020. Included to the was former Springbok Julian Redelinghuis that took us for scrum technique sessions in that same time.
Last but not least Coach Hugo van As, regarded as one of the best coaches in the country for his vision and ability to get the best out of players.
As a person I couldn't have asked for better experiences in my life as a young player than what I've had. I've played two games against the Lions super rugby team in 2019 and 2020 as pre-season warm up games. This game me the chance to scrum against amazing players such as Jannie du Plissis, Dylan Smith, Sti Sthole, Leo Kruger and Frans van Wyk. Also playing against massive springboks like Malcolm Marx l, Elton Jantjies, Lionel Mapoe, Jaco Kriel, Ruan Combrink, Courtnell Skosan, Andries Coetzee and Willem Alberts.
I've also played against the Hurricanes super rugby side in a 2 chukka midweek game. They used this to get used to the altitude in Johannesburg, but I used it to learn as much as I can. I scummed against Jeffrey Tuamuga Allen, Ross Geldenhuis and Fraser Armstrong, which was way different to the Lions due to them having different techniques and tricks. Also playing general play against All Blacks like Ardie Savea, Dane Coles, TJ Perenara, Jordie and Beauden Barrett.
I'm very thankful for everything rugby has given me, but as a 21 year old their is no realistic future for me in South Africa, there I am looking to play overseas and contribute to a club in the way I know I can.
On life beyond rugby I have completed a Diploma in advanced fitness and end of 2020 I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Education from the University of the Witwatersrand, one of the best universities in Africa.
