Club Overview

Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby & Sports Club was formed in 1994 with the amalgamation of Waipukurau High School Old Boys & Waipawa United Clubs.
The Club is situated in Mitchell St. Waipukurau and leases Central Park from the CHB Sub-Union Trust, the 3 fields are kept irrigated throughout summer to ensure excellent playing conditions for the HB Sevens tournament that Central host each year in February.

Since 2019 the club has introduced senior women’s netball which has been a huge success and has gone from strength to strength each year. From one team to four to six and it’s all down to the great community spirit and introducing or reintroducing netball to women of all ages.

Central also has a very strong Junior Club which will see over 100 primary school players turn out in eight teams from Midgets to Senior.

Major Club Projects like the match quality lighting on field No.1 are funded through generous grants from the Lion Foundation, ECCT, Pub Charities and Infinity. Central has been extremely well supported over the years by local Companies and businesses whose funding ensures that Central players throughout the grades enjoy all the facilities and amenities expected from a successful Rugby Club.

Covid’s knocked a lot of us down and out but we’re bouncing back, so if you’re considering an adventure with a few laughs and decent people then we’d love to hear from you.

Central Hawkes Bay Rugby and Sports Club are on the hunt for international premier players to join our club. We are part of the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union and have strong ties and links to our provincial club.

Central Hawkes Bay Rugby and Sports Club is in Waipukurau and is in the heart of Rural Rugby. Our region boasts five Premier Reserve teams across 5 clubs.

Central Rugby and Sports Club has a Premier Rugby side, and Premier Reserve Rugby side and a Women Team. We also currently have six netball teams. Our Premier Rugby side plays in a two rounds tournament which currently consists of 11 other Premier Teams across Hawkes Bay. The competition will generally start early April and finish around the end of June or July.

The region has experienced significant growth in the past few years and has numerous opportunities for employment through the club. Central Rugby and Sports can source accommodation and provide you with lifelong friendships and experiences that only quintessential rural New Zealand can provide.

Central Hawkes Bay is located three and a half hours drive from the country’s capital, Wellington, in the North Island. We are blessed with picturesque golden sand beaches on the east coast where fishing and diving are high on the bucket list and having 5 different beaches less than an hour’s drive away definitely helps that. On the other side of Central Hawkes Bay we have the beautiful Ruahine Ranges for all things mountaineering and hunting. Within the Central Hawkes Bay Rugby club, we have men and women with a passion for both that are more than happy to impart some living off the land knowledge.
